“I invite you to eat while enjoying my song,” said Ty Thy, holding the microphone, with the other hand scrolling through the phone to find the lyrics. Around 16:00, the ground floor area of ​​the restaurant was almost full, guests came in and out continuously.

Ty Thy talks almost all the time, she chats with customers, greets livestream followers. At one point, she stopped for about 15 minutes to sing to the customers sitting in the bar. After finishing work, Ty Thy returned to the kitchen to pound papaya to make salad.

Ty Thy (34 years old), a native of Cambodia, once emerged as an online phenomenon through the video “just pounding the salad and chatting” in 2019. The funny, charming and honest way of talking made the transgender girl receive much attention. Only a few months later, with the support of customers, Ty Thy opened the first salad shop.

After many conversions, Ty Thy restaurant in District 6, Ho Chi Minh City is a place that attracts many diners, reaching 600kg of papaya salad a day, up to 1 quintal during peak times. The papaya salad is made in Thai style, including shredded green papaya, combined with three aspects, dried shrimp, added laksa leaves, peanuts… Notably, Thai sauce has a sour and sweet taste. This dish requires the ingredients to soak up the spices evenly, forcing Ty Thy to pound her hands evenly. She almost had to stand for 10 hours to manipulate the ingredients in the mortar. When brought out to diners, the papaya is soaked in the sauce but not crushed.

Currently, the menu has been expanded from 20-30 snacks such as burnt rice, seasoned fish sauce, pickled ca na, chicken feet, shrimp with Thai sauce… However, papaya salad is still the featured dish of choice. Most.
