Old farmer “blown” chrysanthemum flowers… long legs, selling for nearly $25/pot

Ordinary daisy pots with a height of 50-60cm were burned by Mr. Tran Van Se (Can Tho) for 2 months to double his height. Thanks to the advantage of “long legs”, his flowers are always expensive.

Having worked with Tet flower growing for 20 years, Mr. Tran Van Se (50 years old, living in Long Hoa ward, Binh Thuy district, Can Tho) has a lot of experience in growing a variety of flowers such as chrysanthemum, marigold, auspicious…

With the constant competition in the market, Mr. Se always wondered how to produce different varieties of flowers.

In mid-2021, when the Covid-19 epidemic broke out, he had more time at home. When he was free, he went online to watch the news and learned that in Khanh Hoa (Nha Trang) long-legged chrysanthemums were grown. Pots of chrysanthemums reaching to the top of the seller are very expensive during Tet.

“People grow me also want to try it. With 100 pots of long-legged daisies, I went down as usual in the 7th lunar month. When the chrysanthemum was nearly a hand high, I started burning the lights continuously for 2 months to increase the chrysanthemum growth. height,” said Mr. Se.

The lighting time will vary according to the size of the chrysanthemum flower. Initially, he steamed for 8 hours a day, then gradually decreased.

Mr. Se said each pot of chrysanthemum planted 12-13 plants. The chrysanthemum variety was chosen as the Taiwanese chrysanthemum because of its large, bright yellow flowers.

At the end of the lighting time, the 50-year-old farmer will move the chrysanthemums to the trellis to continue picking leaves and plucking flower buds periodically. It is expected that on January 20, goods will be shipped to traders.

“Traditionally grown chrysanthemums have been sold for about 4.5 months and have been sold for about 1 month longer. Last year, I pulled the daisies up to 1.4m high, but this year due to the effects of flooding and sudden heavy rains. so chrysanthemums are not as beautiful. The possibility of each pot of chrysanthemums is about 1.2m high,” said Mr. Se.

Last year’s Tet, 100 pots of long-legged daisies Mr. Se sold for 300,000-500,000 VND/pot. This year chrysanthemums are shorter, so he lowers the price from 300,000 VND/pot.($1=25,000 VND)

Currently, 200 pots of long-legged daisies are being actively fertilized so that the flowers can bloom in time for Tet.

Besides long-legged chrysanthemums, Mr. Se also planted about 2,000 pots of Taiwanese daisies, pico daisies, auspicious flowers, marigolds….

Excluding all costs, it is estimated that the Tet flower crop in 2023, Mr. Se pocketed about 150 million VND. ($6,000)
