The ‘unusual’ dishes that foreign tourists find most worth trying in Vietnam

After surveying the opinions of readers around the world, the famous travel site Lonely Planet has compiled 6 Vietnamese dishes that foreign tourists think are ‘unusual’ but most worth trying in the S-shaped land.

Lonely Planet’s author Fabienne Fong Yan commented: “Vietnamese cuisine is famous for its diverse street food, but some of it seems to challenge the courage of first-time diners.”

These dishes are extremely popular with Vietnamese people but can make some foreign guests hesitate to taste them.

1. Duck eggs:  is a popular street food in some Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam, Philippines, Laos, or Cambodia. This dish is made from eggs that have formed all the parts of a young duck (about 17-21 days old). Eggs are usually boiled, eaten with soup powder and laksa leaves.

The reason this dish is popular with locals is that they think it has an invigorating effect. If visitors are apprehensive, they can enjoy smaller ‘versions’ of this dish such as quail eggs, often stir-fried with extremely attractive tamarind and lemongrass sauce.

2. Evil chicken with Chinese medicine:  Evil chicken is considered to contain more nutrients than normal chickens. According to Oriental medicine, chicken is sweet, average, warm, fragrant and non-toxic, so it is very useful in nourishing liver and kidney, clearing heat and regulating blood. In particular, this dish is also combined with traditional herbs to create a unique flavor.

3. Chicken  feet: Chicken feet are not used in many countries but are extremely popular in Vietnam. Although it is an inexpensive ingredient, locals can process it into many delicious dishes such as: lemongrass chicken feet, grilled chicken feet, fried chicken feet with fish sauce… Big Dong Tao chicken feet are famous even. It is also considered a ‘specialty’.

4. Blood soup:  is a fresh dish using fresh animal blood (pig, swan, duck) ingredients mixed with a little fish sauce or light salted water to prevent freezing before mixing with minced meat and cartilage. small to freeze. This way of preparing dishes is very popular in Vietnamese cuisine, especially in the North.

5. Red jellyfish salad with shrimp paste:  This dish originates from Hai Phong but seems to be more famous in some traditional restaurants in Hanoi. Eating red jellyfish cannot lack pure shrimp paste, squeezed lemon juice to beat bubbles, drop in a few pieces of red chili, grilled turmeric (yellow) tofu,; copra and herbs such as perilla, marjoram.
